“Beware
of spyware. If you can, use the Firefox browser.” - USA Today
“Better
than Internet Explorer by leaps and bounds.” - FORBES
Mozilla
has introduced Firefox, a browser whose time has come, captured so well
in this quote "necessity is the mother of invention." Given
the exponential rise of malware, spyware, and adware, the web community
has been almost held hostage by malicious code.
For the techies reading this, we know that the majority of code
used to be written in JavaScript, which has now evolved into active X.
MS IE will always be vulnerable to Active X because it is the
native code of its plug-ins. This
is the reason IE browsers are plagued with spyware, browser hijacking,
and all kinds of malicious activity.
So
how does Firefox get around this? Simple. No active X.
That's right. Firefox doesn't run Active X code.
Consequently, all that spyware that malicious programmers have
been investing time into and is giving us headaches is now useless.
In fact, Firefox will not allow pop-up ads and provides a search
bar for most major search engines as well.
Bye, bye Google toolbar (except for PR)!

Spybot
- Search and Destroy
Spybot is definitely the new king in
spyware and adware removal. I have tried it for a
while now and it is more comprehensive, thorough, and
faster than ad-aware. Ad-aware still has a great
following and great guys working to make it number one,
but in my opinion Spybot currently holds that honor.
The latest version of Spybot also come s with a secure
deletion tool called secure shredder. You can use this
to permanently delete files on your computer. Best of all, it's free!

HijackThis
A general homepage
hijackers detector and remover. Initially based on the
article Hijacked!,
but expanded with almost a dozen other checks against
hijacker tricks. It is continually updated to detect and
remove new hijacks. It does not target specific
programs/URLs, just the methods used by hijackers to force
you onto their sites. As a result, false positives are
imminent and unless you are sure what you're doing, you
should always consult with knowledgeable folks (e.g. the forums)
before deleting anything.

CWShredder
A small utility for
removing CoolWebSearch (aka CoolWwwSearch, YouFindAll,
White-Pages.ws and a dozen other names). Spybot S&D
and Ad-aware tend to forget essential parts of the hijack,
so until they update, you can use this to completely
remove the hijack. This program is updated to remove the
new variants once they come out.
